Foundation Year

Foundation Year Degrees

A foundation year is an extra first year that gets you ready for a full degree. It is one of the most popular ways for adults to return to education without A-levels.

What is a foundation year?

A foundation year (sometimes called Year 0) is built into a degree. It builds your study skills, academic writing and subject knowledge, and when you pass it you move straight on to the first year of the degree.

Who is it for?

  • Adults who do not have A-levels or equivalent qualifications
  • People who have been out of education for a while
  • Anyone who wants a supported start before full degree study

Funding a foundation year

When a foundation year is part of a degree, it is usually covered by Student Finance in the same way as the rest of the course. Read our guide to Student Finance for adults.
